Business insurers set to sign up to Black Interns campaign

The business insurance industry, like every other sector, has recently been moved to ask questions of its levels of diversity and opportunity. This follows a 2020 which has been marked by, among other things, the resurgence of the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement.

Now the Association of British Insurers (ABI) has joined many of the large scale organisations across British society pledging their support to the 10,000 Black Interns campaign.

What is the 10,000 Black Interns campaign?

The Black Interns campaign was developed to improve career opportunities for young black people in the UK by providing paid work experience of at least four weeks so that the UK can evolve “a sustainable, growing expansion in the quality and quantity of opportunities for black people in the UK”.

All those who gain work experience opportunities as part of the campaign, whether they are working for a business insurance company, a legal firm or another kind of employer, will be paid the living wage as laid out by the Living Wage Foundation.

The campaign is designed to address much of the historical and institutional disadvantage suffered by black people in achieving the career growth and opportunities their work and talents deserve.

The 10,000 Black Interns internships will begin in the winter of 2021 and continue until summer 2022.

The launch of the campaign was headed by figures from 10 sectors, including business insurance, accountancy, university education, health data science, healthcare management, investment management, law, advertising and recruitment.

ABI involvement

The Association of British Insurers is set to encourage participation among its membership. In fact, a number of insurers have already said they will participate, including Zurich and Aviva.
