Bake Off-related insurance claims
It may have just aired its final show on the BBC, much to the disappointment of many fans, but the last series of The Great British Bake Off seems to be having much more of an impact in people’s homes than just a few teary eyes.
Data collected by insurance provider Ageas shows that the number of insurance claims for oven and cooker incidents tends to rise during the programme’s annual ten-week run. The insurer looked at the statistics of kitchen-related claims over the last three years and found that despite there being an overall drop, there was a significant rise during the weeks in which the show was on air. The data showed a 15 per cent rise, with claims involving cooking mishaps such as fires, dropping hot dishes on ceramic hobs, and ruined kitchen floors and oven doors.
While it’s great that a TV show inspires its viewers to take up a new hobby, the research suggests that quite a few of them may not be up to the standard of the show’s contestants.
It seems that when the eager, newly-inspired viewers took to their kitchens in the hopes of recreating some of the mouth-watering marvels they saw on screen, they had much more serious matters to worry about than a simple soggy bottom – namely, burning the house down. Ageas said the most alarming find was that 38 per cent of the fire claims they received in 2015 were started in the kitchen, and almost a third of those fires began in a cooking pan.
